Department of Anatomy

The Department of Anatomy is concerned with one of the preclinical subjects – HUMAN ANATOMY which forms the cornerstone of medicine. The department has provided successful training to over 1200 1st MBBS students over these past academic years as per the curriculum recommended by MCI & KUHS. 

All teaching faculty have regularly attended national and state level conferences, CMEs, symposiums, workshops and webinars from time to time with the purpose of upgrading and updating levels of academic awareness and excellence.

ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT

1. Academic
The academic activities in the department are tailored according to the recommendations of the MCI & KUHS. The department of anatomy of GMC Manjeri engages in interactive lecture classes, small group teaching and discussions, elaborate laboratory dissections and demonstrations to equip the undergraduate students with extensive knowledge of the gross anatomy, histology, embryology and radiology of the human body in their first year. The new curriculum recommended by the MCI has been implemented. Competency based medical education is followed since 2019-2020 academic year. 
Early clinical exposure sessions in addition to the lectures integrating clinical subjects are regularly incorporated into the curriculum so as to enrich their practical understanding.
Comprehensive assessments are conducted for the students at frequent intervals to evaluate their academic prowess.

2. Research
The faculty of the Anatomy department of GMC Manjeri undergo thorough training towards conducting research and regularly attend various seminars and workshops with regard to better research. The department constantly oversees studies in cadaveric dissections, histology, osteology, novelties in cadaveric preservation methods and much more which contributes towards a better understanding of the complexities of human body as well as development of newer surgical management techniques.

3. Conduction of CME
The department conducts CMEs on prime topics and recent developments in the field of Anatomy and related sciences. In association with the CME various competitions are held for the academic betterment of the students.

3. Museum
The anatomy department maintains an impressive museum with a wide variety of dissected specimens, working models and highly informative charts which serve a greater purpose to the undergraduate students. M.B.B.S students are permitted to avail the facilities of the museum during working hours. On request, for academic visits of students from schools & colleges of the neighbouring districts, facilities in the Anatomy Museum are made available.

4. Acquisition of cadavers
Ethical body donation programs are held at frequent intervals by the department of anatomy of GMC Manjeri in various localities of the district. With the talks and interactive sessions the common people are enlightened about the uses for cadavers for the future of budding doctors encouraging them to donate their bodies to serve a higher purpose.  Awareness classes were also done through medias like radio and newspaper. Donated bodies by the public are received with due respect & acknowledged, which are further utilized for academic purposes in the department.

5. Embalming for transportation
In public interest and service, the department on request, undertakes embalming of dead bodies for transportation purposes both national & international. 

6. Inter-departmental coordination
Routine meetings are held with the other first year departments – the departments of Physiology and Biochemistry regarding the curriculum of the students and joint assessment of the performance of the students.

7. Good practices implemented in the department

Students:

  •  The faculty of the department maintains a strong student-teacher relationship characterized by mutual respect, trust and open communication.
  • The innovative mentor-mentee system operates by providing adequate empathy and support whenever required.
  • The students are made aware of the importance of communication skills, empathy and ethical behaviour in this profession and are guided to adopt a demeanour suitable for a good doctor.
  •  Feedback is collected from students regarding their academic concerns and suitable solutions are worked out.

Faculty:

  • The department of Anatomy at GMC Manjeri arranges regular departmental meetings where daily concerns are discussed over tea.
  • The faculty including the teaching and non-teaching staff join together to celebrate special occasions.
  • The Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry Departments of the college often collaborate to celebrate festivals.
