The department of surgery in a medical college is a basic specialty involved in the teaching of undergraduate students, training of post graduates and patient care services. The surgery department in government medical college Manjeri is also involved in the same process with the exception that at present postgraduates are not trained since the admission process is not yet on. The basic working module of the department is as follows.

The department of surgery has actively involved in the fore mentioned processes since inception. For the smooth functioning of all the parameters involved and as per medical council of India recommendations the department is functioning as four units. Since Manjeri medical college had faculty belonging to Kerala Health services and since they are not regular teaching faculty the department was functioning as four units for patient care services and as three units for teaching purposes. The three teaching units were managed by medical college faculty and the fourth unit was managed by the health services doctors.
